From the beginning of his work on the postils, Luther had stated that they were supposed to serve common pastors and people, and thus were to be the great devotional book of the Reformation. Martin Luther’s collected sermons for the church year were originally published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. These were among his most popular works. Aside from his catechisms, they did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book.” As defined by Webster, a postil is “1: a short homily on a Scriptural passage especially : one on the Gospel or Epistle for the day or 2 : a collection of such homilies.“
Volume 5 of Sermons of Martin Luther : the Church Postils contains sermons on Epistle texts from the Thirteenth to the Twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity Volume 6 contains sermons on Epistle texts for Advent and Christmas. Volume 7 contains sermons on Epistle texts for Epiphany, Easter and Pentecost. Volume 8 contain sermons on Epistle texts from Trinity Sunday to Advent. These volumes can be found on the Library shelves under the number 252/LUT.
