RGG: Sweet middle-grade story. There is quite a bit going on: a dead, unspoken of father; an absentee mother; a grandmother who knows all the secrets; a New Mexican hispanic community untouched by modernity or socio-economic problems; magical realism. It doesn't all quite hold together. But if you suspend disbelief, it's an enjoyable read. Reading Interest: 10-12

This story is about a girl named Izzy who lives in San Diego with her mom. Her father died when she was younger. Her mother get the news that she has to go to Costa Rica for work. Izzy is sent to live with her grandmother in New Mexico. This is the first time she's been to New Mexico. By going to New Mexico, she hopes to learn more about her father and her self. This is a story about a girl trying to find out who she is and what place she has in the world. I think it is a great book for students around 12 years old who are also going through some of the same things as Izzy. ( )

Tortilla Sun is a great book about a girl who moves away from New Mexico to San Diego and then has to move back to New Mexico for the summer to be with her grandma. She is able to connects with her past and get information about her late father, which her mother would not talk about. This book it great because it has culture, family, and even magic in the book. Students will connect with this book because they could relate to the culture and setting.
