Sounds thrilling, and believe me it is. But The Red and the White does not capture that atmosphere. You can’t see the players hitting each other into the cold winter ground. No bloody noses and broken bones. A ball hurling through the air, and men below it, praying it will end up between two goalposts. The Red and the White is just another boring book of facts.
For people who want to learn something about the sport it won’t help them very much. It will however share with them, (in a very boring way I might add), over 100 years of history. I wasn’t expecting a full rulebook, but it threw words around that would leave many newcomers puzzled. Rugby is an amazing sport, but sadly The Red and the White does not grasp it’s intensity, and is more like reading a textbook than a chronicling of sports history.
