An engaging and chatty look at ghost stories and reports of hauntings through the ages. Though it could have done with slightly better referencing (a list of sources at the back would have saved a lot of folded corners!) this is a cheerful bit of popular non-fiction and a must for anyone with an interest in ghost stories and their ilk.

(the short story at the end's not half bad either, though I wonder if it would read as well for someone who doesn't know York)

This is a study not just of ghostliness but of Britishness, an exploration of why, now perhaps more than ever, we need the unexplainable - a sense of the unknown.
