"The second edition of "Te Hekenga", published fifty years after the first edition (1929), is unchanged from the original. Its story deals with the Horowhenua region, the "Kapiti Coast" north of Wellington; it spans the arrival of the Maori leader, Te Rauparaha, and his Ngatitoa tribe until the settlers and the railway move in, and the township of Levin begins to grow beside Lake Horowhenua. The main portion of the book deals with the period of Maori settleent prior to the arrival of Europeans, observations of Maori life at the tme, and the changes in the land and its inhabitants as ownership was gently and insistently pried away from the Maoris ... Mr Rod McDonald was a descendant of the first white settlers in Horowhenua and a fluent speaker of the Maori language. Mr Ewart O'Donnell was a journalist and he selected from the considerable volume of spoken reminiscences of Mr McDonald, to provide an account of Maori life on the "Kapiti Coast" and the tragic events that alienated much of the Maori land ... At the heart of the book is the loss of Maroi land to Pakeha speculators and opportunists ..." -- Jacket. No library descriptions found. |
