During the winter of 1849-50, while ascending the old Bear valley trail from Ridley's ferry, on the Merced river, my attention was attracted to the stupendous rocky peaks of the Sierra Nevadas.
Introduction: The book here presented is the result of an attempt to correct existing errors relative to the Yosemite Valley.
Preface: On March 27, 1851, Yosemite Valley was discovered and first entered by 58 members of the Mariposa Battalion, a volunteer military force engaged in a punitive expedition against the local Indians.
