I LOVE this whole book... the writings and early lives of the man considered to be the Mirror of Christ. I especially loved the Sacrum Commericium, or the allegory of St. Francis' romance with Lady Poverty. There is something particularly beautiful about the simplicity of the early lives. ( )

If you're interested in Francis of Assisi, start here - then go read other things by all means, but start with not only the documents contained here but the commentary on them. (And it's a nice, pretty, red book with gold letter and even a ribbon) ;)
