While the book is well and inventively written, the main character's fascination with old classic films and Bell's experimentation with Shakespearean themes and plots go right over the heads of most of Bell's target audience. The book was poorly received by the students I know. ( )

This book , Only in the movies 's setting takes place outside of Jake's house . In the beginning , outside of Jake's house , Jake saw a film crew shooting a moive . Jake gets insirped and he decided he wanted to be a movie marker as his career .
Jake goes to a school named York school , to impove his knowledge about '' film maker '' . He learns and makes friends . Jake falls in love with a gurl named Alba but Alba doesn't like Jake , she like Chad . Vanni help Jake to make Alba fall in love with him and Alba asks Jake to help Chad fall in love with her . This whole thing is confusing .. ( )

William Bell's Only in the movies surprised me with its unique text. In this book it feels like im there and sees whats happening like when alba is doing a play. Like in the play when vanni and jake were hiding and alba was acting out Romeo while chad was Juliet. Alba was on the ground at a scene, while chad was on stage. They were rehearsing, repeating a plays lines. Laughing, Smiling, Enjoying. ( )

When Jake Blanchard gets a job as a student set designer at the York School of Arts, it's an exciting first step towards realizing his dream of making movies. Jake is the one who designs and builds all the sets. But soon enough he finds himself starring in a drama of his own creation. Nothing in Jake's life is the same after Vanni, a whip-smart, wisecracking Indian-Irish-Canadian joins his class, and after Jake meets the unforgettable Alba, who is as stunning as she is unattainable. Jake is tongue-tied around Alba and enlists Vanni's help. All of a sudden — like the Shakespeare play Jake's school is putting on — Jake finds himself entwined in a love triangle of sorts, complete with secrets and suppressed passions, contrived plots, miscues and misunderstandings. By the end, as in any good comedy, tensions are resolved and Jake's world has been re-made, though in a way he could not have anticipated. ( )

I enjoyed reading this romantic comedy. The characters are unique and well-developed. Short screenplays is included to show how Jake is feeling throughout the story. An interesting re-telling of Cyrano de Bergerac in modern times.
