(There Was a Crooked Man, Usa 1970, col, 126') Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Con Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Hume Cronyn, Warren Oates, Lee Grant, Burgess Meredith, John Randolph, Barbara Rhoades. * Arizona, 1883: incarcerato dopo un colpo di cui però ha nascosto il ricco bottino in una tana di serpenti a sonagli, Pitman (Douglas) riesce a convincere i suoi compagni di penitenziario a evadere : unico superstite della fuga, verrà ucciso da un serpente a sonagli mentre sta per recuperare il denaro e così l'onesto sceriffo Lopeman (Fonda) che gli ha dato instancabilmente la caccia potrà buttare alle ortiche la stella e godersi i dollari in Messico. Straordinario e acido western scritto da David Newman e Robert Benton che Mankiewicz rivitalizza con i temi che gli sono più cari: lo studio dell'avidità umana, lo scontro delle intelligenze (come Douglas sgretola le certezze dei suoi compagni di prigione per aiutarlo nella fuga, ma anche come Fonda alla fine gioca tutti), il piacere di "mettere in scena" un'immagine che poi si rivelerà falsa e ingannevole, il diffuso pessimismo sull'uomo e le sue qualità. E tutto questo senza tradire le regole del film di genere, grazie anche a due interpreti al loro meglio, sbruffone e sicuro di sè Douglas, riflessivo e quasi timido Fonda. ( )
