Well written book about a young Confederate soldier from Kentucky during the last year of the war. As a scout for General Bedford Forrest, Drew Rennie wears himself out riding, fighting, and scouting, dealing with little food, no rest and worn out horses and mules. He also deals with a grandfather who disliked him and disowned him because of his father from Texas. Complications also arise when his younger cousin runs away to join the army with him. A good story for young men, and I remember reading it years ago when I was in high school. Recommended. ( )

Book description
Begins May 1864.   The story follows the adventures of Drew Rennie, originally in John Hunt Morgan's Company in the Army of Tennesee, and later with General Buford and Nathan Bedford Forrest, until the end of the Civil War.   Rennie was raised by his resentful maternal grandfather, who never forgave him for his parents' runaway marriage and his mother's death in childbirth.   His family mostly favors the Union, but Rennie sides with the Confederacy.
