Anton goes on summer holidays with his grandparents and discovers that they don’t have a pool at the holiday camp, only a lake. And Anton refuses to swim in the lake as it is full of creepy crawlies and germs, etc. While wandering around with his remote control car , he runs across some other children holidaying and ends up provoking a bully. Then his grandfather takes him on a special outing and he makes a rather unusual friend. Short book which won the German Children’s Literature Prize, I found the main character selfish and annoying but he gets his comeuppance from being a total brat to his grandparents and the other kids at the lake. But then disaster strikes . . . their holiday camp does not have a pool! Instead it has a lake - a lake filled with murky, slimy, dark disgusting sludge - and Anton just can't understand why everybody else is so happy to dive-bomb and swim in it all day long. Baking in the sun and dying of boredom away from the lake and the other young people on holiday, Anton has no idea how he's going to survive the holiday. That is until he meets an unexpected friend.… (more)
