Step back in history through the eyes of one of the masters of European realism. This keenly observed and utterly absorbing account of the period after Napoleon Bonaparte fell from power in nineteenth-century France is both an interesting historical document and an engrossing mystery.

Intricate plot that revolves around opposition to Napoleon, not necessarily emigré and Royalist, but from true republican ministers who are alarmed at Bonapartist imperial ambitions and the risks they involve.
A superbly crafted historical novel. Some familiarity with French revolutionary history helps.

A knowledge of French history of the revolutionary and post-revolutonary period is needed to comprehend this book. I struggled despite an excellent introduction by Alain. I only managed to read the first 20 or so pages. Balzac's description are wonderful in their detail leading from the general to the particular.
