A poignant and bittersweet memoir of a father's last months of life, as his son comes home to Cleveland to help his Dad with caretaking duties as he goes through his final months of colon cancer. Much of the book is about Cleveland, the Browns football team, and how Dan and his dad are inextricably linked through them. Dan was a screwup for much of his life, and now coming back home many of his self-destructive habits rise to the surface again. But there is much good here, as he learns new show more things about his father and family that strengthen the tenuous bonds, even as he prepares to move back to Texas once the father dies. Wrenching and real and honest, and not always easy to read. It's funny how fathers and sons who have never expressed their emotions to each other (as my dad and I never have) can find other avenues by which to do that. show less
