James A. Roosevelt was a Major in the US 308th Infantry who according to Charles W. Whittlesey, who led the "Lost Battalion," in WWI "ran the supply train with great efficiency, often going forward under fire to see that ammunition and food were delivered". He survived the war to die of cerebral meningitis on the trip home. He was a cousin of President Theodore Roosevelt. [from Richard Slotkin, Lost Battalions (Henry Holt, 2005)]
