Character description

Saboor is the son of Hassan Ali Khan and his wife, Mumtaz Bano.   His paternal grandfather is Shaikh Waliullah the leader of  the Karakoyia Brotherhood, a mystical Islamic order.   When Hassan, a courtier, presented his son, aged six months, to  Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab, the Maharaja was so taken with the child, and convinced that he would bring good luck and health, that Saboor (and hence Mumtaz Bano) was ordered to move into the royal Citadel where they live within the women's quarters.  At the opening of the series, November 17, 1838, Saboor is 18 months old.
