Sixteen-year-old Clara Gardner's purpose as an angel-blood begins to manifest itself, forcing her family to pull up stakes and move to Jackson, Wyoming, where she learns that danger and heartbreak come with her powers.
shanesuzanne: About a teenage girl coming of age and finding her inner strength through a journey of forbidden love, friendship and great family dynamics. A light, funny and entertaining read!
FINALLY - a YA book in which the parent isn't oblivious to everything that is going on! Five stars for that! The mother in this story actually has some involvement with her kids - and a part in the story. The father only makes a brief appearance, but the kids live with their mother on the west coast, and their father lives on the east coast, so it is plausible that he isn't around. The mother, however, isn't just a background character we know has to be there because, let's face it, the main characters are children. She is actually part of the action.
I was intrigued by the premise that angels could have part human children and that they all had a purpose to fulfill. Why, it seems, they only have ONE purpose to fulfill is not clear to me...that seems like a waste of "angel-blood" abilities. Still, it was interesting. However, (and this is where it lost a star) with all this talk about angels, glory, and divine purpose, one might think there would be a little more communication from God...and by "a little more" I mean ANY. Maybe that is to come in the sequel. Also, Clara's mother (who is "Dimidius" - half angel - while Clara is "Quartarius" - quarter angel) seems to have a lot of secrets (including her "purpose") that I am guessing will be revealed in the sequel as well. Clara's brother is also Quartarius and Clara finds a friend who turns out to be Dimidius. Throw in some fallen angels (Dark Wings) and it really does make for an interesting story. It is well written and includes a lot of suspense all leading to an ending designed to make you want to buy the sequel. Smart. Very smart. I bought it already. ( )
3.5, again, but erring on the side of 4, because, while this book is nothing near perfectly written (especially the eye-wateringly YA romance tripe at the Prom and boy descriptions therein), I am so so So Impressed by the unexpected massive double-twist ending.
This story could have ended in the most predictable of YA Romance/Mystical Angel ways, and it didn't. Two times over. And that makes me so much more driven to needing to dig my fingers into it. (And it's why even on the day I finished it I bought book two and read to the 32% before even being willing to fall asleep.)
This is not your mother's angel story, and we get that pretty much from the get go. Dragging out all sorts of hints, confusion, revelations everywhere. ( )
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days-- and also afterward--when the angels went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They war the heroes of old, men of renown. --Genesis 6:4

First words
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees. He's around my age, in that space between child and man, maybe all of seventeen years old. I don't know how I know this. I can only see the back of his head, his dark hair curling damply against his neck. I feel the dry heat of the sun, so intense, drawing the life from everything. There's a strange orange light filling the eastern sky. There's the heavy smell of smoke.

Instead, we were changed. We were thrown for a cosmic loop. I don't know if I've fallen from grace, or if I'm on some sort od Heavenly Plan B. Maybe it doesn't matter. One thing I do know is that we can never go back.

Book description
Clara Gardener has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place -- and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make -- between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
UNEARTHLY is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.
