Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda

  1. 11
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (pingdjip)
  2. 01
Hokwerda's kind by Oek de Jong (pingdjip)

Buwalda kiszámított kegyetlenséggel robbantja szét a szemünk előtt Sigeriusék családi harmóniáját.

Compelling, if dark, for much of the book. Then it all just kind of fell apart. ( )

Make a man into too much--judo world champ, math genius, head of university, govt minister--then twist his world with an abandoned dead wife, ignored criminal trash son, porno-queen stepdaughter, and nightly wrestling with almost-step-son. Then bump off this way-too-much guy (self-done, no secret, reader finds out early).

Now tell the story from both ends of the action, alternating, moving inwards towards the middle when the deed happened, placing the middle at the end of the book. Leaving family detritus strewn wildly in both directions. Wearing out the reader.

Also, know diddly about the weather in Berkeley and San Francisco where some action happens during days that are "hot and humid" when the family goes to the beach everyday???? It's never hot and humid there. And the beach is for chilling (most of the time) in the damp drippy fog. Makes you wonder what else Buwalda had wrong. Besides psychology, of course. ( )

While the plot orchestration and lively character renderings of “Bonita Avenue” are dazzling, Buwalda’s go-for-broke style can be a hit-and-miss affair. Sometimes it’s brilliantly on target. Sometimes it just feels overwritten.

I have no doubt that Peter Buwalda is a superb writer. In terms of both level and character, his depictions of people and events are Nabokovian. But more than just "family problems," the book lacks a unifying theme, so much so that the narrative—particularly in the middle—becomes mired in improbable anecdotes and a plethora of unconnected threads that only come together in the epilogue. It's unfortunate that Buwalda didn't seem to have any sort of plan for this long essay. There would have been twice as much content in half the pages. There is nothing wrong with Buwalda as a describer, though, and I'm looking forward to his next book, which should have deeper themes and maybe more structure.

Bonita Avenue is the unraveling of the Sigerius Family because of SECRETS. Relationships are destroyed by lies, minds destroyed by madness.
The characters in the scen and Aaron Bever, Joni’s fella,
Siem Sigerius
and his wife, Tineke,
Siem Sigerius, a former athlete and current math genius,
Tineke, Siem's wife
Joni, Siem's headstrong daughter;
Aaron Bever, Joni’s fella,
Siem's son, Wilbert, is in prison for killing a supervisor with a sledgehammer.
This is intriguing, but I just couldn't understand a lot of the situations. There were places and names I didn't understand. It was a good book, just couldn't understand it.

I received this book from Blogging For Books for this review.

No one is especially likeable, but Buwalda knows how to tease his reader with addictive story lines. A considerable achievement for a seasoned writer much less a newcomer, Bonita Avenue is an entertaining end in itself, and evidence that Buwalda is just getting started.

Book description
Professor Siem Sigerius - maths genius, jazz lover, judo champion, Renaissance man. When Aaron meets his girlfriend Joni's family for the first time, her multitalented father could hardly be a more intimidating figure, but somehow the underachieving photographer manages to bluff his way to a friendship with the paterfamilias. With his feet under the table at the beautiful Sigerius farmhouse, Aaron feels part of the family. A perfect family.

Until, that is, things start to go wrong in a very big way. A cataclysmic explosion in a firework factory, the advent of internet pornography, the reappearance of a forgotten murderer and a jet-black wig-all play a role in the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan... and of Aaron's fragile psyche.
