Book description
Georgie Bridges married Arthur because the man she loved was marrying someone else, but now that her husband is dying she feels that her life has been a failure. When, at the beginning of the World War II, she is told that her house is being taken over she begins a new phase of her life.

Beth Rawlings is the daughter of a woman who was cruelly murdered, but she has been brought up as the beloved daughter of Annabel and Paul. She hopes her new job she desires so much will bring her contentment.

Hetty Tarleton ran away to Paris to live with her lover when she was a young girl. Now she is caught in France as the Germans invade. Can tragedy, violence and despair eventually lead her to happiness?
