Vanessa Grant lives on a ranch near Lubbock, Texas, in 1875. She has been in love with Clayton Proffitt since she was a little girl. He is ten years older than she and has always made time to listen to her and talk with her over the years. Her mother, struggling to run the ranch, has quickly remarried an evil man, Price Venture, after the untimely death of Vanessa’s father. Her brother tries to gain approval from his stepfather by obeying him without question. One night her stepfather, who drinks a lot and visits nearby brothels, enters her room with only one thought in his mind. Clayton Proffitt served heroically in the Civil War for the Confederacy. He saw unspeakable atrocities during his time at war. After the war, he was hired by Vanessa’s father as foreman of the ranch. He has always had a soft spot for Vanessa and tried to help her through her growing up years with a friendly ear to listen. Clayton has a strong faith in God and tries to live as God would want him to live. One night he finds Vanessa crying in the barn. What he learns from their conversation causes him to decide to leave the ranch with Vanessa. Clayton honors his promise to Vanessa’s father by promising her that he would keep her safe. Their journey takes them many miles, but they keep going knowing that Price will stop at nothing to get Vanessa and her dowry back. How is God going to work this out? These two characters are suffering from events that have left them scarred. Clayton has learned to rely on God and sets a fine example for Vanessa to follow and learn from. The writing style was able to draw me in to the story easily. There were some phrases and language usage that sounded more modern day and not likely to be used in the 1800s. There were several typos and grammar mistakes, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story. What I like most was the author’s ability to bring together seamlessly faith and how to live it, not just talk about it. I’m looking forward to book two in the series titled, A Texan’s Honor.
