There isn't much sun in the fun when a billionaire real estate tycoon is found murdered on the Tilt-A-Whirl at a seedy seaside amusement park in the otherwise quiet summer tourist town of Sea Haven. John Ceepak, a former MP just back from Iraq, has just joined the Sea Haven police department. The job offer came from an old army buddy who hoped to give Ceepak at least a summer's worth of rest and relaxation to help him forget the horrors of war. Instead, Ceepak will head up the murder investigation. He is partnered with Danny Boyle, a 24-year-old, part-time summer cop who doesn't carry a gun and only works with the police by day so he has enough pocket money left over to play with his beach buddies by night. In the first novel in a new series written in the spirit of Carl Hiaasen's work, the Tilt-A-Whirl murder pushes Ceepak's deep sense of honor and integrity to the limits as unexpected twists and turns keep the truth spinning wildly in every direction.… (more)

This is a complete popcorn read. Nothing new to,the genre but it was just what the doctor ordered. It went down smooth. ( )

1st book in the Ceepak series. John is a by the book military hero just home from combat overseas. His former platoon buddy offers him a job in sea Haven, where's he's chief of police. A sleepy place except for summer when the tourists descend upon the town. Ceepak is partnered with Danny who is a young, part time, summer cop who is used to parking tickets & drunk scuffles. A high profile murder turns the town upside down. The story (told by Danny as he & Ceepak work the crime) is a joyride of a motley assortment of clues, suspects, victims. Throw in that Danny is "in training" with Ceepak and Ceepak has a code that makes him unable to tell a lie. A great twisty ride that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. Who really committed the murder? ( )

I got to the end of this so it wasn't a total stinker but it tried hard to be. The writing was ok or almost ok but the plot desperately needed an editor. I 'read' the audio version and I have to say the voices that the reader gave the various character didn't help. At least I don't have to buy any more in the series. ( )

Stayed up late reading Tilt A Whirl, the first John Ceepak mystery from Chris Grabenstein. Fortunately, I have the next two ready to go on the Kindle. I was taken in by the charming seaside community in New Jersey and the somewhat snarky tone of Danny, the narrator, and expected more of a cozy mystery. The ending was shockingly dark and shook both the reader and the characters. A well constructed mystery that showed how perceptions and assumptions can drive us to make mistakes. ( )
