Heldere inleiding op de wiskunde en toepassingen van de wiskunde. In het eerste hoofdstuk met de titel 'Waar is wiskunde voor nodig?' schetst Crilly de plaats die de wiskunde in de loop van de geschiedenis innam, binnen de wetenschap en in de maatschappij. Ook is het een vooruitblik op de onderwerpen die volgen in de twintig korte hoofdstukken. Rekenen, getaltheorie, meetkunde, statistiek, symmetrie en speltheorie komen allemaal aan de orde. Elk onderwerp wordt vanuit een praktische kant benaderd. Bij statistiek komen gokspelletjes en loterijen aan de orde, bij wiskundige modellen gaat het over de bevolkingsmodellen van Malthus. De uitleg is steeds helder, zwart-witafbeeldingen verduidelijken de essentie. De combinatie van correcte uitleg van de wiskunde met voorbeelden die het praktisch nut van de theorieën laten zien, zorgt ervoor dat dit boek een mooie inleiding is voor de geïnteresseerde leek.
