Summary:
A story of a little Donkey named “Little One”, and a little boy and his father. The boy’s father had four donkeys that he uses to carry heavy wood to sale to make money to feed the family and the donkeys. Three of the donkeys were young and strong, and the fourth donkey was small and old. The father decided toe sale the little donkey because the little donkey could not carry wood because he was very old. The father told the little boy that the little donkey cannot work enough to pay for the food he would have to buy to feed him, and that was the reason he had to sale the little donkey. The little boy asked his father if he could take him to town to sale him to someone that would take care of him. So the next day he took him to town to sale him and had a hard time finding the right person to buy the little donkey. Finally a man came up to the little boy and asked he if he would sale him the little donkey and that he would take good care of him. So the little boy being had and happy sold the little donkey to the man. The man was Joseph and his wife was Mary, Jesus mother from the Bible.

Personal reflection:
Illustration in the book were well done, and the story was sad and then at the end the story was sad and happy. The little boy was sad to see the little donkey leave, but very happy that the little donkey was going to be well taken care of.

Class Extension:
1.The book can be used to show how much people care about their animals.
2.The book can also be used to show how the little donkey was so brave, and how he was willing to die for his friend, so that the little boy’s father would not be upset at him if he did not sale the little donkey.

Depending on your point of view, this is either a poignant tale of a boy and his donkey, or simply downright depressing. Small One (the donkey) must be sold, but he is so old and weak, the only taker is the tanner. Will Small One sacrifice himself to provide for the boy who loves him or will another purpose be revealed? A nice story to kick off the Christmas holidays. ( )
