Okay, so Wood is going for the typical Viking saga this time around. I applaud him for the effort, ad I'll judge him as mostly succcessful. He traces one family, the first to settle on Iceland, down through 11 generations and 400 years, from the dawn of their power to their fall. Throughout these generations we see many characters who personify the evolution of a ruling class, and Wood sums them up quite nicely by making the 11th generation son echo the actions of the 2nd generation son but to a disastrous effect. Times have clearly changed and the static nature of the ruling class should maybe learn that the brutality of ages past is no longer the answer. Sometimes staying in the annex is better than trying for the limelight.

Rise and fall of a founding family in Iceland.

A brutal trilogy about one of the first families to settle Iceland. The tales cover eleven generations of Haukksons, from their settler beginnings, to dominance of the island, to their ultimate defeat. Like the other 'Northerners' comics, this one is self-contained. Moodily drawn, it evokes the cold and empty island and its hardened inhabitants. ( )
