Tragic, comic, and utterly honest, this extraordinary memoir is at once a great family saga and a magical self-portrait of a writer who witnessed the birth of a nation and lived through its turbulent history. It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the forties and fifties in a small apartment crowded with books in twelve languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was twelve and a half years old, his mother committed suicide-a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz, changes his name, marries, has children, and finally becomes a writer as well as an active participant in the political life of Israel. A story of clashing cultures and lives, of suffering and perseverance, of love and darkness.… (more)

Ozova priča zaranja u sagu o jevrejskoj – ljubavlju i mržnjom ispunjenoj – vezi s Evropom, i ide od Vilne i Odese preko Poljske i Praga do Izraela. Humor i duboka tuga, istorija i čovečnost čine ovaj magični portret umetnika koji je prisustvovao rađanju jedne države. Ovo je životopis bez premca koji žudi da bude pročitan i oplakan.

„Tragikomična saga o ljubavi i knjigama, o jevrejskom životu i imigrantskom životu širom sveta, o univerzalnom ludilu svake porodice.

– Majkl Frejn

„Vrlo lična, dirljiva priča... Potresno.“
– The Times

„Čudesno.“
– Independent

Spectacularly good historical autobiography of Amos Oz from birth in 1939, and family life in the formative years of the Palestine Mandate Territory through to the foundation of Israel.
Firstly as a personal record of those years I found the book invaluable. Secondly, this wonderful translation from Hebrew offers a moving story of Jewish life in a new continent. The story focuses on the struggle to adapt to the formation of a new country where the old mentalities of European Jews must be reinvigorated for Israel to prosper.
As a teenager this conflict sees Amos leave home (a few years after his mother's desperately sad suicide), change his name to Oz and join a kibbutz, much against the family traditional view of what his future should be. It is as a kibbutzim that Oz finds his gift as a writer and in an odd way reinforces the great tradition of literary scholarship that brought his forebears fame.
An important book to read.

Gutted me.

It took several weeks to get through, which I regret -- sitting and reading it in one go, streaming through the different waves of meaning and stories and people, might've made this a 5-star. Yes, it might need some trimming, but it was a powerful lens into Oz's mind, the way his thought process worked, how he remembered his mother and the other people in his life, and the stories that they told him.

A beautiful book. ( )

This moving autobiographical tale of Oz’s childhood is fascinating in that it gives a child’s view of the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel and what it was like to live as a Jew in British Mandated Palestine prior to that. Particularly memorable is his remarkable description of the night Israel became a nation and the poignant mixture of hope and terror.

Mentioned early in the novel, the suicide of his mother casts a solemn pathos across the entire work as Amos grows and begins to assert his own independence by working on a kibbutz. Along the way, he meets a number of people who would play key roles in the newly born nation.

In addition, there’s plenty of family and friends’ experiences of the Nazi occupation, both those who escaped it and those who tragically did not. I found this more moving having just read The Kindly Ones, too.

An important and interesting read. ( )

Gunter Grass says, "… Amos Oz, who wrote one of the great books that I've read in recent years. When I am asked I always say that 'A Tale of Love and Darkness' [published in 2002] is one of the most important books written in the 20th century ."
