Mara Gilgannon finds herself called back to her small Iowa hometown when her aunt Zee's long-time partner Glad is murdered. Mara begins to suspect that Glad's vocal opposition to a Wal-Mart opening in the town may have more to do with the murder than anti-gay bias, as was originally supposed. Mara gets re-acquainted with small-town life, with its share of intrigue and old resentment while trying to get to the bottom of the potentially lethal process of corporatisation of rural America.
