Anonymous user: Massive and lavishly illustrated quarto which covers Liszt's years in Italy, most notably between 1861 and 1869, in much greater detail than Mr Walker could in his biography. In German, never translated into English.

Anonymous user: Still the finest one-volume introduction to the music of Liszt. Concise, opinionated, perceptive. Contains an old but surprisingly little dated version of Searle's magisterial Catalogue (note the capital "C") of Liszt's works.

Anonymous user: Only for the most curious Lisztians. Another spectacularly illustrated book by Herr Burger. Collects virtually all of Liszt's surviving photographs, splendidly reproduced and with ample explanation of the development of photography during Liszt's lifetime. Tolerably prejudiced, extremely informative, occasionally insightful. Plenty of musical examples and technical analyses. First published in 1970 and therefore the biopgraphical part is considerably dated: to be read with caution, preferrably after one is familiar with all three volumes of Mr Walker's biography.
