Franz Liszt: A Chronicle of His Life in Pictures and Documents by Ernst Burger (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: The finest illustrated biography of Liszt out there: comprehensive, sumptuous, insightful. Contains chronologies of life and works that may be a trifle dated but no matter. Long out-of-print, rare and expensive book that is worth every bit of time and money you spend on it. The English edition is supposed to have some mistakes corrected in comparison with the original German one.… (more)

Franz Liszt: Die Jahre in Rom und Tivoli by Ernst Burger (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: Massive and lavishly illustrated quarto which covers Liszt's years in Italy, most notably between 1861 and 1869, in much greater detail than Mr Walker could in his biography. In German, never translated into English.

The Music of Liszt by Humphrey Searle (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: Still the finest one-volume introduction to the music of Liszt. Concise, opinionated, perceptive. Contains an old but surprisingly little dated version of Searle's magisterial Catalogue (note the capital "C") of Liszt's works.

Franz Liszt in der zeitgenössischen Photographie by Ernst Burger (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: Only for the most curious Lisztians. Another spectacularly illustrated book by Herr Burger. Collects virtually all of Liszt's surviving photographs, splendidly reproduced and with ample explanation of the development of photography during Liszt's lifetime. In German only, rare, expensive.… (more)

The Liszt Companion by Ben Arnold (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: Comprehensive and scholarly resource about Liszt's complete oeuvre, to a much lesser extent about his personality. Tolerably prejudiced, extremely informative, occasionally insightful. Plenty of musical examples and technical analyses. On the whole, far superior to the Cambridge Companion edited by Kenneth Hamilton.… (more)

Franz Liszt: The Man and His Music by Alan Walker (Anonymous user)
Anonymous user: Magnificent resource about Liszt's personality and music written by leading pro-Lisztian experts and edited by Alan Walker himself. First published in 1970 and therefore the biopgraphical part is considerably dated: to be read with caution, preferrably after one is familiar with all three volumes of Mr Walker's biography. Lots of musical examples and technical analyses for trained musicians.… (more)
