This is the third volume of Robert Solomon's collected articles in the philosophy of emotions, a series informally entitled The Passionate Life. The first, Not Passions Slave, published in January 2003; the second, In Defense of Sentimentality, will publish in August 2004 (A fourth and finalvolume is also planned). Like those two volumes, Beyond Reason contains a series of connected essays on emotion, this time focusing on the relationship between emotions, culture, and various conceptions of rationality. It will particularly embrace recent work in anthropology and cognitive science. And like those volumes it will be aimed at a broad audience of philosophers, social scientists, and other people interested either in the explosion of new work on the nature of emotions or the on-going debates about cultural relativism.
