Lanzelet is an enigmatic piece of Arthurian literature. Composed soon after 1194, it is the second German Arthurian romance. It was based on a French model, now lost, which could have been part of an 'old' hardly accessible Arthurian tradition, so that Lanzelet is a key text in the early history of Arthurian romance. In addition, however, its fascinating literary facture means that a text which was long undervalued is now a central element in Arthurian research.
