Constant's life is told in anecdotes. Starting from whe he was nine years, ending when he was a teenager. He is brought up by his grandmother who has a seedy hotel in the Zeedijk in Amsterdam (red light district). From the café, Constant explores the world. Outside, he chases others and draws on people from the neighborhood. And he fantasizes his own world, including conversations with [[Vondel]]. And finally, he must say goodbye to a number of important things in his life.

The atmosphere of the story is dingy and sixties. Grandmother is rough, but loves her grandson. Constant learns life in the real world, but ends up ata good high school as well. Highly recommended, just because of the great ambiance and the fair story. And don't forget the writing style.
