( ) This transitional reader will appeal to animal lovers! In this delightful first book the main character, Suzannah is disappointed that pets are not allowed in her apartment building. Her mom suggests volunteering at an animal shelter. Suzannah is thrilled to help take care of the pets there. Eventually a guinea pig named Jelly Bean comes to the shelter. Suzannah promises to find this special guinea pig a good home. This promise turns out more challenging than she thought. The volunteers come together to write letters to their teachers in order to find Jelly Bean a good home. At the end of the book there are facts about guinea pigs, a section on helping at animal shelters and even an honorary shelter pet squad member pledge. This is the first book. This book is designed for young readers that are transitioning out of the picture books into chapter books this story is about Suzannah who loves animals but can't have one at her own apartment building. Mom has a great suggestion of having her volunteer where she joins other kids that are little bit older than her. The plot revolves around a little guinea pig named jellybean. She has promised to find a home and it becomes a challenge. The pep squad come to the rescue with an idea of sending out letters to all the teachers in the buildings to try to find a home. Great story about volunteering and also that even if you can't get something (I.e. A pet), you can still work with animals. no reviews | add a review
