Fantasy. Fiction. Science Fiction. Everyone knows dragons have been extinct for over a thousand years. Everyone is wrong. At least one dragon remains, and military scientists from the Cofah Empire are experimenting with its blood, using the magical substance to power deadly new weapons that could be used to bring the world to its knees. That's a concern for Zirkander, Cas, and the rest of the Iskandians, but all Tolemek wants is to find his missing sister. The last time he saw her, their father had locked her in an asylum because of a mental illness with no cure. Now the military has taken her. What use the Cofah have for her, Tolemek can only guess, but he is certain she is in danger. He must save her before it's too late. But her fate is inexplicably tied to the dragon's, and he must find it to find her.… (more)

I have been a huge fan of Lindsay Buroker's books since the day that I lucked into my first one. Patterns in the Dark might be my all-time favorite so far though. Let me say that I pray Buroker has a long writing career ahead of her so that I can find many many new favorites.

Patterns in the Dark has a singular focus; a mission if you will that is a bit of a departure from earlier books. Buroker’s books are always adventure filled, which is what I crave when needing a break from the real world.

Never think though that because this is steampunk/fantasy, which is typically escapist fiction, that Buroker is lacking classic writing skills. She has the chops. This is escapism at its best and you still obtain a bit of education along the way.

I received a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My thanks to the author Lindsay Buroker.

The books in the Dragon Blood series:

1. Balanced on the Blade's Edge
2. Deathmaker
3. Blood Charged
4. Patterns in the Dark
5. The Blade's Memory
6. Raptor
7. Souldblade (review coming soon)

My reviews in the Dragon Blood series ended up a bit disordered. My review for The Blade’s Memory is coming soon along with her most recent and final book in the series Soulblade.
