Welcome to Torte, a friendly, small-town family bake shop where the oven is heating up as high as the body count...Jules Capshaw is still chewing over her husband Carlos's return to Ashland, Oregon. Could there be too many cooks in the kitchen? Whatever is stirring between those two will have to wait. Despite the Oregon Shakespeare Festival being dark for the winter, the bakeshop is bustling, the dough is rolling, and there's no rest for the weary...especially when murder is thrown into the mix. When Mindy Nolan, the owner of a new restaurant in town, turns up dead, the batter at hand thickens. Jules knows that there was bad blood between Mindy and others in town, and tracking down the killer could prove to be an unwelcome treat. And to top it all off, there's Carlos, who is pleading with those delicious dark eyes and sexy Spanish accent for Jules to take him back. Is home where the heart is or will she make a fresh start...and risk getting burned?… (more)

Carlos, Jules’ husband, has shown up in her home town, and Jules is still deciding how she feels about him. They are separated, sort of, but it looks like a reconciliation may be in the works. But Jules is firmly ensconced at the Torte which she runs with her mom, and Carlos is a ship’s chef. Adding to her stress is the newly dead body she finds, along with a man up to his elbows with the victim’s blood. He claims it was a suicide, and he was trying to save her. Well, the cops will have to figure it out, and there is plenty of action before all is said and done. It’s quite an entertaining tale, and quite well performed by Marietta DePrima. ( )

This book was more about running a bakery/restaurant, and the main character's love life (which is not very interesting, as her love interest is nearly perfect), than it was a mystery. The mystery was very weak. But I did love the baking descriptions. ( )

Juliet Montague Capshaw lives in Ashland, Oregon. This little town is home to a Shakespearean Festival and as you can tell from her name, this is embraced by the townspeople. Businesses are named after Sharespeare's works or other Elizabethan ties. Juliet works with her mother in the family bakery/cafe, Torte. She has returned from working on a cruise ship where she met and married Carlos. After finding out that Carlos was keeping secrets from her she returned home and finding out how much she missed her family, the town and the business she has decided to stay in Destiny. Carlos has come to visit and is doing his best to convince Juliet to return to the ship with him. Baking keeps Juliet focused and when a new eatery moves in across the street, Juliet will need to keep focused, especially after she may have walked in on a murder! There are various storylines in this book involving several characters which keeps you interested and wondering "who done it". A thoroughly enjoyable and delicious story. The recipes at the back of the book look extremely appealing and are all enjoyed in the story.

This is the fourth book in this series and even though I have not read any of the others, I had no problem enjoying the story of knowing what was going on. This is a fun, interesting series that will leave you wanting more and with you stomach growling. Cozy mystery readers will enjoy this one.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I do enjoy this series, however, the talk of all the food and pastries is killing me. I have the other 2 books in the series, but need to take a break from the food porn. :) ( )

I received this book free from the author, Ellie Alexander along with other books from the Malice Domestic convention (I'm going to have to find a way to go to that). It is an ARC version so please keep in mind that things may have changed when the book goes on sale. This book is the fourth in the series but you don't need to read the first three in order to follow along.

Jules Capshaw is back home in Ashland, Oregon and working at her parent's bakeshop. Her husband, also a chef is home to try and mend the rift between them. The bakeshop is doing well because Jules is bringing in new ideas that is helping pull/push the bakeshop out of the recession. Someone not so lucky though was the former owner of a restaurant called Jester's. A businesswoman named Mindy Nolan, has bought the place out and in it's place has remodeled the place into a modern, tacky restaurant that is cranking out greasy fast food. The people of Ashland's downtown are not happy since the decor of the town is Shakespearean/Elizabethan in style. Jules finds Mindy dead in the restaurant. Did the restaurant's former owner kill her? Maybe it was Rosalind, the town's biggest cheerleader.

Because Jules has found Mindy she feel's like she needs to find out who did it. But this book really isn't about the murder, it's more about Jules and the bakeshop. And that story is good. . .just don't read it on an empty stomach, or make some of the chocolate molasses cookies and a cup of coffee on hand while you read it.

Now I have to go out and buy the rest of the books in the series. ( )
