Fresh from the staggering success of The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair, Marcus Goldman is struggling to write his third novel. A chance encounter in Florida throws him some inspiration from a surprising source: Alexandra Neville, the beautiful, phenomenally successful singer and Marcus's first love. All at once, memories of his childhood come flooding back. Memories of a family torn apart by tragedy, and a once glorious legacy reduced to shame and ruin. The Baltimore Boys. The Goldman Gang. That was what they called Marcus, and his cousins Hillel and Woody. Three brilliant young men with their whole lives ahead of them, before their kingdom crumbled beneath the weight of lies, jealousy and betrayal.

***************

I found it better than [...] Harry Quebert (possibly also because of the audiobook version and the lack of creepy relationships with underage girls), but Dicker still writes in cliches: the Bully, the Hostile School Principal, the Coach Who Believes in His Boys, the Brave Orphan (called FINN) etc.

There are out of place Cowboy Moments, there are adults that mostly say that "I'm Proud of You Boys" and boys that speak as if they ate a Dale Carnegie book. There is also the Love Triangle between the Protagonist, the First-Love and the Athlete (at some point, I started skipping most of the "Marcus & Alexandra: Present day" parts without missing anything of interest).

The Tragedy is an evident ploy, and as usual with this author, it will come up in the last 3 chapters (at least not completely out of the blue as the finales in the HQ book).

There were also some moving moments, which admittedly surprised me, and some interesting quotes (I DO liked: “Writing a book is like setting up a holiday camp. The life of one, which is usually lonely and quiet, is left by a lot of characters that arrive one day without warning and turn you upside down. ”). ( )

Not as much of a page turner as he last book - the on-off romance became a bit tedious as was the constant reference to 'the tragedy'. ( )
