When the affluent Lintons of Lenox Hill summon Sarah Brandt to examine their teenage daughter, their worst fear is confirmed: she is with child. The pregnancy is a mystery, however, as the young woman-mentally still a child herself-is never left on her own and denies that any man has ever hurt her. It's a delicate situation, one which casts suspicion on those close to the Lintons, including their beloved minister, the Reverend Oliver Upchurch. As midwife Sarah Brandt and a reluctant detective sergeant Frank Malloy investigate, fate deals their inquiry a harsh blow. The reverend falls dead during a service, poisoned by cyanide-laced wine in his chalice. Murder on Lenox Hill
4 Stars

The plot of this particular installment is a little different with two separate yet related mysteries that touch on several dark and sinister secrets. While the culprits and motivations are easy to figure out, it is, nevertheless, entertaining to follow along as Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy uncover the clues.

Sarah and Malloy's relationship continues its slow but, but there are indications that Sarah is beginning to come to terms with the loss of her husband. It is clear, however, that nothing will happen until Tom Brandt's murder is solved.

Speaking of which, the ongoing investigation into his death takes an interesting turn and reveals some fascinating insights into the perceptions of the female psyche during the time period.

In sum, another enjoyable addition to the series and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. ( )

Sarah's father is convinced that Thomas Brandt wasn't the paragon of virtue Sarah believes him to be. So, he ask Malloy to continue his investigation. Malloy knows that destroying Brandt's reputation will hurt Sarah, but agrees to continue the investigation in hopes of mitigating the impacts.

Sarah's life is full with Aggie and Maeve now living with her and Mrs Ellsworth providing additional support. When distant acquaintances ask Sarah to attend to them, it is because their developmentally delayed daughter seems to be pregnant. Much to Malloy's chagrin, the investigation draws him and Sarah deeper into a scandal involving children and sexual abuse.

Sarah Brandt is asked to call on the Linton’s of Lenox Hill, when she arrives Mrs. Linton tells her that they believe their daughter was molested and ask her to examine Glory. The only problem is Glory has the mind of a child and they don’t want to upset her.

Sarah asks Frank Malloy to call on the Mr. Linton to explain the options and if there is anything Frank can do.

The case keeps expanding when the Linton’s minister, Reverend Upchurch, is murdered in the middle of communion.

Interesting read that I enjoyed. ( )

Im listening to them in order, because the two main characters make them thoroughly enjoyable. Thompson does a superb job of setting the atmosphere of late 19th century manhatten. On to number 8. ( )
