From the "Foreword" of "Museum Registration Methods":

Museum Registration Methods had its origins in discussions among registrars had had long experience in registering museum accessions and loans, there was little written infromation available for those who were new to the museum field or whose museums were beginning new loan activities. The need for a manual to describe procedures for registering and cataloguing museuma accessions and loans became amplified in the yeas following the Second World War, as large collections of European art were brought to the United States for exhibition while their museum were being procedures. In 1952 those attending the Registars Section at the annual meeting of the American Association of Museums voted to support a manual trating these subjects.
