Since taking over TED in the early 2000s, Chris Anderson has shown how carefully crafted short talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, stirring excitement, spreading knowledge, and promoting a shared dream. Done right, a talk can electrify a room and transform an audience's worldview. Done right, a talk is more powerful than anything in written form. This book explains how the miracle of powerful public speaking is achieved, and equips you to give it your best shot. There is no set formula; no two talks should be the same. The goal is for you to give the talk that only you can give. But don't be intimidated. You may find it more natural than you think. Chris Anderson has worked behind the scenes with all the TED speakers who have inspired us the most, and here he shares insights from such favorites as Sir Ken Robinson, Amy Cuddy, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Salman Khan, Dan Gilbert, Mary Roach, Matt Ridley, and dozens more -- everything from how to craft your talk's content to how you can be most effective on stage.… (more)

Chris Anderson is a phenomenal writer and this book is FILLED with concrete information but communicated in a wonderful way that even the stuff you kind of know is interesting to read about - he also intersperses with plenty of anecdotes from varying ted talks (ones I've added to my list to check up online most of them), but also loads of stuff I didn't know at all or stuff I kind of had an inkling about, but not the tools to solve. This makes me think back to that Rhetorics class I took one semester in uni, I got a lot of theory done in it, and we did practice a few speeches - none of it really developing me as a speaker anything at all, definitely not compared to my own trial & error approach when I've been doing my own talks after my depression. In comparison this book I will be mining time and time again. I borrowed this one, but I'm going to have to buy it because even after I process the core info, there's just not enough to get it all in a single run - I'll be returning to this time & time again - and probably enjoy the journey just as much each time. Highly recommended.

At first I didn't think much of it, but turns out it offers nice advice about organising a speech. Reading this book I saw the view of the writer in several worth-mentioning subjects and learned random important lessons by speeches from random people that had spoken on TED. I suggest it to those who seek to ameliorate their social and learning-teaching skills. ( )

This was a good set of guidelines and advice for public speaking and presentations. A lot of standard things, but well presented, and some information I hadn't heard before (discussion of the uncanny valley in scripted vs extemporaneous talks). Well presented as an audiobook as well. ( )

There is something that scares most people more than death, more than zombies, more than heights. Public speaking. As the director of the most successful public speaking series Chris Anderson wants to let people know how TED talkers go out onto the scene, face thousands of people or millions through video, and deliver a captivating talk.

As one of those that are neither skilled nor experienced as a public speaker I try to at least capture the theoretical parts of it and I think this book is full of sound advice. The advice is naturally focused on a TED like format. If you talk shorter or longer it will be different. If you talk to more or fewer people it will be different. Still, I find it valuable to get as much support as possible for that time it matters.

The common theme in the book (as there should also be in a talk) is that the idea is the most important part. The idea has to do the talk, and without a good idea, you shouldn't even try.
