Working up the courage to take a big, important leap is hard, but Jabari is almost absolutely ready to make a giant splash.
Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He's finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he's a great jumper, so he's not scared at all. "Looks easy," says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can't help but root for.

Summary: Jabari building his courage to jump off the diving border that seems way too tall and into the swimming pool.

Another awesome book for tackling so many stereotypes. This also was one where perspective through the art was clear. I loved how fun to hear it was read aloud, and how much can be talked about with the book physically too. ( )

Jabari goes to the pool and he struggles to get the courage to jump off the diving board at the top of the pool. Jabari finally gathers the courage to jump and feels more confident afterwards. This book is good for the class room because it teaches students that they can do anything with the right mindset and courage. ( )

Book description
This small moment narrative story tells of the apprehension a young boy feels when diving off the diving board for the first time. It slowly leads up to the moment when he has to decide if and how he will jump with encouragement from his family. Readers get to feel his anxiety with the bit-by-bit description but in the end Jabari learns that the risk was worth it all and is looking forward to taking a safe risk again.
