When the kind-hearted little Mole stumbles upon a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest, he brings it home to make his own. Against the advice of his parents, Mole tends to his new pet with care and dedication. As Mole’s little charge grows, the bird begins to test its wings. The story unfolds as Mole, with the help of his wise Grandad, learns the true meaning of showing love for another. Delicate drawings complement the minimal text, depicting each seen with finite detail. An abundance of soft lines and rounded figures express a humanistic quality in the characters and supporting scenery. With its power message, sweet sentiment, simple sentence structure, and beginner vocabulary, young readers will enjoy this picture book as much as parents and toddlers. ( )
