Epigraph
Dedication
I am happy indeed to dedicate this book to Gertrude. So good a friend, particularly during the days when the story was written. And no acknowledgement to her would be full and true without remembering her many friends and her gracious home, Stirling, in the Reading of Pennsylvania and the Berkshire of that state.

Book description
Somebody really has it in for young lovers in London parks - couples have been sprayed with acid in a series of savage attacks. Chief Superintendent Roger West of Scotland Yard has a prime suspect, but the case requires discreet investigation. In this, West is more hampered than helped by an impetuous young assistant who is determined to prove West wrong. The Yard fairly crackles with the tension between the two men, as events move faster to a fantastic climax.
