Esta es una novela esplendida, en la que el autor, mediante el relato de algunos episidios de la vida del joven protagonista, el hijo de un ratero que vive en una cueva, muestra las dificultades y los placeres de una vida simple en un pueblo pobre en el que las ratas camperas se toman de aperitivo y en el que la supervivencia depende tanto del tiempo como de los caprichos del cacique. Los personajes de la novela estan muy bien construidos, pero el verdadero protagonista de la novela es el paisaje, las estaciones y la vida en el campo, que el autor parece conocer bien y haber disfrutado. ( )
