Geralt de Riv, a witcher, uses his vast sorcerous powers to hunt down the monsters that threaten the world, but he soon discovers that not every monstrous-looking creature is evil, and not everything beautiful is good.
JessiAdams: Both are clever adventure fantasy series with some magic and a main character who goes to great lengths to save the world. Both also have moments of laugh out loud hilarity.
A fix-up novel containing several short stories about a witcher (a hunter of magical monsters) called Geralt de Rivia.
With Eastern-European influences (the author is Polish), many of the tales have a fairy-tale flavor, along with some action and fights. Since I can't read the original, I read it in Spanish, since I have heard good things about the translation to that language.
The Witcher himself is a grim professional. He is experienced and follows his own honor code. The language is quite colloquial, particularly in the way the characters speak. there are all kinds of monsters with imaginative names and different kinds of powers, but sometimes the real monsters are the humans.
Overall, quite entertaining. I wish we would get to know the main character more deeply, though. ( )
I read this for the "Borrowed From A Friend" part of my 2020 reading challenge. I wasn't a fan. I watched the Netflix series first and didn't love that either. It was well acted and well filmed, I just wasn't interested in the plot at all. I found the book very much the same, it was kind of slow and plodding. ( )

Book description
Geralt the Witcher—revered and hated—is a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin. Yet he is no ordinary murderer: his targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent.
But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good... and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.
