The book has a ten A.U.D. trail which I heartily recommend. Everything is still in place as of 2024 though I wasn’t able to see the ‘commit no nuisance’ sign in St Faith’s Lane. However, at the entrance to the lane there is a parish boundary marker for St George’s so this sort of makes up for it. Afterwards I had a coffee as suggested by the author. My favourite A.U.D. is the enormous one in Tombland Alley. Actually, I might go and have another look at it in a minute.
I also went and found some of the others he’s documented, but had to stop when it started raining. I wasn’t able to locate the one in Rose Lane, but they’re doing some sort of construction and it might be hidden. Unfortunately, I think the one in Mountergate might have been destroyed. There’s a scar on the footpath where I think it might have been.
However, I have discovered one that Loveday missed. St Michael at Plea. Church Alley runs behind it. There’s an iron A.U.D. with damaged railings on the left hand side, protecting the nook at the basement window.
As local interest books go this is up there’s with Berwick’s Beating the Bounds. And I don’t say that lightly. ( )
