Mystery. Romance. Suspense. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:Dive back into the world of The Naturals in this e-novella from Jennifer Lynn Barnes, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Inheritance Games
Cassie Hobbes has been working with the FBI since she was a teenager. Now twenty-three years old, she and her fellow Naturals have taken over running the program that taught them everything they know. As a unit, they're responsible for identifying new Naturals â?? and solving particularly impossible cases. When their latest case brings back a ghost from their past, Cassie and the other Naturals find themselves racing against the clock â?? and reliving their own childhood traumas. In a small, coastal town in Maine, there has been a rash of teen suicides â?? or at least, that's what the police believe. Mackenzie McBride, age twelve, thinks differently. Desperate to make herself heard, she stands at the top of a lighthouse, threatening to jump . . . unless the FBI agents who rescued her from a kidnapper at age six come to hear her out. Enter the Naturals. It doesn't take Cassie long to realize that Mackenzie isn't bluffing: she truly is convinced that the suicides are murder, and she really will jump if she can't get the FBI to believe her. To the outside world, Mackenzie is nothing more than a traumatized child. But so was Cassie, once upon a time. So were Michael, Dean, Sloane, Lia, and Celine. With a storm rolling in off the ocean and Mackenzie's position becoming more precarious by the moment, the Naturals have very little time to get to the truth about the deathsâ??and about twelve-year-old Macken… (more)

Twelve is not like any of the novellas that I have read. The short form of the novella actually worked for the story, making it feel like this was the way it was always meant to be told. It also had a great pace. The only thing that made this story shorter was that there were less obstacles for the characters to overcome when dealing with the case. There was plenty of time to spend with the characters that I love while also building an interesting mystery with high-stakes. Like always, the story was about the case the team was working while also being about the characters personally. The flashbacks which focused on each of the main characters when they were twelve felt like a natural addition to the story while giving the readers more of their history.

It was great reading about Cassie and the gang when they are older. Actually, this is the first time in a long time that I can say I read a YA novel with a protagonist who is my age! Reading Twelve is a great way to relax for an hour or two if, like me, you don’t have time to commit to a novel. I would love it if Jennifer Lynn Barnes wrote more of these over the years. I’ll definitely be rereading this novella in the future. ( )

This is a YA book and a 12-year-old character is about to potentially commit suicide. This phrase is written on the page about it, "But this was her body. Her choice. Her life."

Am I the only one who thinks this is an issue? ( )

I love this Natural series - reminds me of FBI profiler TV shows kind of like Criminal Minds. I wish there were more of these books in this series. ( )

In Twelve, we learn what happens to the Naturals team as they move into their twenties. Some are training to become real FBI agents, but for Cassie who is now the senior member of The Naturals unit, life has remained pretty much the same. In this new case, Cassie has been called in because a girl she once rescued is threatening to jump from the top of a lighthouse unless her team investigates a crime that she has uncovered. Each member of the team is called in to use his or her specialty, but in addition, we get short looks into each of their lives at age twelve, giving us more of a look at the childhood that each of them endured that made them who they are.
I love this quick look into the lives of the Naturals team and the clever way their pasts are interwoven into the story. My only complaint is that the story is so short, but this is a minor complaint, and as always, Barnes delivers yet another winner to her readers. ( )

It was great catching up with the lives of these characters again and seeing the Naturals working together to solve the latest crime. Five years have passed since the first book and they now work for the FBI.

I also enjoyed the backstories of Cassie, Dean, Michael, Sloane and Lia which showed what their lives were like at the age of twelve. The mystery was also well-handled and the ending was a surprise. I also enjoyed the killer's point of view. An intriguing read. ( )
