In a smart and funny novel by the author of the critically acclaimed, Small Admissions, a family's move to New York City brings surprises and humor. Allison Brinkley-wife, mother, and former unflappable optimist-discovers that her decision to pack up and move her family from suburban Dallas to the glittery chaos of Manhattan may have been more complicated than she and her husband initially thought. New York is more unruly and bewildering than she expected, defying the notions she developed from romantic movies and a memorable childhood visit. After a humiliating call from the principal's office and the loss of the job she was counting on, Allison begins to accept that New York may not suit her after all. When she has a fender-bender, witnessed by a flock of mothers at her son's new school, she is led to the penthouse apartment of a luxurious Central Park West building and encounters a spoiled, hungover, unsupervised teenager who looks familiar. It doesn't take long to recognize him as Carter Reid-a famous pop star who has been cast in a new Broadway musical. Through this brush with stardom, Allison embraces a unique and unexpected opportunity that helps her find her way in the heart of Manhattan.… (more)

Silly but cute, easy to relate to this mom of 3 moving to the city, her momming is very believable even if the other premises are a bit silly. ( )

WOW! I really enjoyed this book. Before reading it I wondered what I had thought of Amy's debut novel, Small Admissions, loved that too according to my review and this book didn't let me down. I loved the characters, and even though I would never live in NYC the author made for a great story about moving into a new life with a complicated family as a unit. I also can't wait to read the new book out, Musical Chairs. ( )

I thought it was going to be another story about a woman left by her husband. Turned out it was a wonderful fun book about working as a PA and Broadway. Same person could appear again ( )

I love the way this author writes. There’s something about her writing style that really pulls you into a book. She makes you care about the characters and what becomes of them.
This book is about 400 pages and I nearly finished it in one day, sitting around on a lazy Sunday and not wanting to put it down.

Allison always dreamed of living in NYC. When her husband gets a job offer there, they jump on it. They move from Texas to NYC. Allison expects lots of excitement but she doesn’t anticipate a small apartment, her kids’ dramas about schools and her own job troubles.

Allison loses a job almost immediately after moving, due to no fault of her own.

When picking up her son from school, she has a minor car accident which leads to her meeting Carter.
She doesn’t recognize him at first. But Allison recognizes that Carter is only a teenager and all alone. He’s extremely wealthy but there’s no one to care for him.
Despite Carter’s prickly personality, he can’t seem to prevent Allison from caring about him. She’s very maternal and she sees a kid who needs someone.

After getting herself pretty entangled in Carter’s life, she finds out he’s a famous singer. He has just been cast in a Broadway play and he wants out of it.
Through a turn of events, Allison becomes his personal assistant and it becomes her responsibility to make sure he stays in the play.

Totally unique storyline.
I appreciate that Allison’s husband was a nice guy. There was no storyline wasted on unnecessary marriage drama. This story is about Allison, her mostly happy well adjusted family and the needy pop star she’s caring for.

I really enjoyed this. It’s funny, it’s entertaining and sweet at times. I liked the characters. I don’t have any constructive criticism here :) I just straight up enjoyed it.
