So much more than an introduction to tarot, Bakara Wintner's gritty and relatable guide allows you to understand the cards on a new, deep level, rather than simply memorize their meanings.Young Blood, Old Magic: A No-Nonsense Approach to the Ancient Art of Reading Tarot You do not need to learn the tarot because you already know it. It is from this radical jumping off point that WTF Is Tarot breaks down the ancient art of cartomancy. This fresh, accessible and sometimes cheeky guide sheds a holistic light on how to read tarot, from the foundation of magic itself to understanding those tricky court cards to offering readings to others. In WTF Is Tarot, author and tarot reader Bakara Wintner unpacks the magic of the Major and Minor Aracana with shamanic wisdom and girl boss wit, illuminating their meaning with thoughtful anecdotes and analogies that reveal how deeply rooted these symbols already are in our everyday lives: we can feel the Moon in a howling barefoot run through Prospect Park, accept the grace of Temperance in falling in love or a divine intervention, "ghost the haters" with the Six of Swords, or identify when it's time to let go of an ex with the Hanged Man. WTF is Tarot offers far more than a refreshingly candid tutorial on card reading. Bakara goes on to investigate the magic of crystal healing, chakras, meditation and other magical practices. This young witch offers not just a guide, but an invitation for even the most mundane Muggles to welcome magic into their lives, and for experienced wizards to rediscover it once again.… (more)

The vibe of the book wasn’t for me but I can see how it would appeal to others. I would recommend this book to folks looking for a more relaxed, informal voice. Beautiful yet minimal illustrations and there is some useful information when beginning tarot. Ultimately, there a lot of personal anecdotes that may be relatable or intriguing to some, but not a great fit for me. ( )

Hands down mt fave tarot book so far

She had me at (typical Millenial child who tried to move shit with her mind after watching Matilda).
I loved her voice and her take on the cards and their meanings.
Was enoyable to read and get a more nuanced and lively point of view on the tarot. ( )

This is a great book for any layman to pick up and read about the wonderful art of reading tarot.
The author writes the book as one big story. You start with the zero card, The Fool and as you go through the journey through the major arcana cards you find yourself faced with many different challenges both good and bad until finally reaching The World card and your rebirth.
The minor arcana cards are put together by suits and the way that the author describes each minor arcana card makes it extremely easy for pretty much anyone to relate to what the author is saying about each individual card.
This book goes through each of the individual cards of a 78 card tarot deck as well as spreads and a brief history on the cards. Very well done! ( )

Overall, the book is a mixed bag. When it is good, it is good. When it is not, it brings the text down. Not recommended for absolute beginners, especially if they are learners who need a lot of structure. I am glad to have read it so I can add it to my learning but not one I recommend. To be honest, I am not sure I see the hype in it.

I’ve got a number of books on tarot, and this one is very unlike any of them. It’s a pretty basic book-brief intro, meanings of all the cards, a couple of sample spreads, and that’s it, other than a few pages at the end on chakras and crystals, etc. What makes it different are a couple of things: she’s removed the formal language that most tarot books are written with, and she illustrates the meaning of many of the cards using events from her own life. This humanized the descriptions, and made many of them easier to understand. This is not to say that she thinks the cards are just psychological archetypes or prompts; she is firmly on the side of them being magic. The minor arcana gets pretty short shrift a lot of the time, but the majors are very well done.

The title should give you a clue that there will be a lot of cusswords inside, so if you are offended by the F word, don’t buy this book. Four stars. ( )
