Basically, this cookbook covers baking, fruit-related things, apples and turkey. I'd like to try a lot of the breads and many of the cakes. There's cutesy "country-folk" stories that I'm not really interested in because they often don't relate to the food at all. ( )

Another one of Christopher Kimball and Co.'s obsessive cookbooks of good plain food. Some excellent recipes for those willing to take some time. But since I already have The Cook's Bible I'm letting go of this one. ( )

What sets ''The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook'' apart, however, is Kimball's experimental streak.... Even when he doesn't print a chart, Kimball usually clues the reader in on his efforts to find, say, the perfect filling for a lemon meringue pie. The charts and commentary on kitchen equipment are easily worth the price of the book, even if it means spending a few hours too many around the cider press.
