A mystery that follows Chloe as she attempts to discover who stabbed her husband, Adam, while she was attending an award ceremony. Suspicion of the culprit changes throughout the novel as new evidence emerges and Chloe finds herself defending her teenage stepson, Ethan, after the police charge him with murder. Complicating the situation, is that Adam was previously married to Nicky, Chloe’s older sister, who has always been the less successful of the pair. Deceit, control, manipulation and domestic violence feature throughout as Burke spins an ingenious plot and keeps tension gradually mounting as the investigation and Ethan’s trial progress to an unexpected finale.

This was a fast-moving, interesting mystery, but I kept getting distracted by annoying quirks along the way. Chloe Taylor is the “better sister” evidently because she completed college and became ultra-wealthy, as well as marrying her inferior sister’s ex-husband, Adam, and raising their son. Adam is murdered and the police immediately focus on the son, Ethan, as the killer. Chloe and sister Nicky bond while working together to prove Ethan’s innocence.
I enjoyed the courtroom sequences, but the police investigation was conducted so poorly that Chloe was instructing the detectives in how to do their jobs. So many twists were introduced and rejected that I almost lost interest in who would finally be found guilty. Then everything was wrapped up and tied with a bow. ( )

This is the first book I've read by Alafair Burke, but it definitely won't be the last. I enjoyed the mystery and the legal aspects of the story. The characters were well developed, and I did not see the twist coming.

I'm happily working through Alafair Burke's books, including the series she wrote with the late Mary Clark Higgins. Whew is my reaction to the ending of this one! No, I did not see it coming!! Definitely page turning reading as the story twists and turns. ( )
