Book two in Patterson western theme mystery thriller. I like pace of it, didn't get bored or felt it was too long. Character development was also good and I'm happy with how the romance part pans out. Will definitely read book three. ( )

Rory Yates [“Texas Ranger”] returns, now sent to the tiny West Texas town of Rio Lobo to investigate the apparently-accidental death of Councilwoman Susan Snyder. Rio Lobo Detective Ariana Delgado requested his assistance; she’s the only one in the entire department . . . and in the town . . . who believes the woman was murdered.

Complicating Rory’s life is a leaked security video of him taking out a couple of bank robbers and an inspired-by-Rory country ballad written and sung by his girlfriend, up-and-coming country star Willow Dawes. It’s not easy keeping a low profile when you're the star of a viral YouTube video with half a million hits and there's a song about your bravery playing repeatedly on the radio. Rory’s hoping this case in Rio Lobo will help him escape his sudden notoriety.

But it isn’t long after his arrival in the two-stoplight town that Police Chief John Grady Harris declares that Rio Lobo has one too many Texas Rangers. Despite the obvious resentment, Rory investigates Susan’s death with Detective Delgado and soon uncovers a surfeit of secrets and corruption.

Will Rory need to become an outlaw to keep more people from dying?

Anchored by a strong sense of place, this, the second book in the Rory Yates series, pulls the reader in from the beginning; its short chapters help keep the suspense mounting and the tension intensifying. The unfolding story, filled with danger and hostility, spins out its tale of murder, corruption, and non-stop action in a compelling mystery that keeps the reader guessing.

Well-developed characters, several intriguing plot lines, unexpected twists, and a never-saw-it-coming denouement all work together to make this book difficult to set aside before turning the final page.

Highly recommended. ( )

This was a quick and easy read, I read it in just a few hours. However, it was not short on action and tension. This is the second book in the series. I did not read book 1, so although I missed some of the back story, I think this book easily stands on its own.
Texas Ranger Rory Yates is assigned to investigate a suspicious death of a councilwoman in Rio Lobo Texas. While investigating, there are more deaths and more suspicious activities.
I liked Rory, a man of honor.
