This was such a cute fairy tale-like book! ( )

Stopped reading after several chapters. Characters have no depth or dimension whatsoever and I didn't want to spend any more time reading about the bumbling king and his awful advisers, or seeing any more virtuous servants and soldiers die. The children's artwork is a lovely inclusion, however.

Cute kids book. A little strange and not in the Harry-Potter-magical way, but still a story that younger kids would enjoy. I plan on reading it to my kids soon. What I absolutely loved about this book were the pictures she used from kids all over. Those drawings truly made the book special. ( )

I was shocked by the number of people who were murdered, hurt or beaten in this book; it was very, very dark and I would never read it to a sensitive child. Still, I enjoyed it very much, four stars. ( )

Is it a children’s book or an adult book? I have no idea. It was like, be a good person, don’t bully but then murder murder. I wanted to like it but I’d rate it the worst book I’ve read all year. I would never read this to a child and I will never read it again. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
The Ickabog is dedicated to:
Mackenzie Jean, who favorite story it always was and who urged me for a decade to write it up properly;

Megan Barnes and Patrick Barnes in everlasting memory of Lisa Cheesecake and the Llama;

and, of course, to two wonderful Daisies, Daisy Goodwin and Daisy Murray, proud daughters of the QSC.
First words
Once upon a time, there was a tiny country called Cornucopia, which had been ruled for centuries by a long line of fair-haired kings.

Book description
From J.K. Rowling, a warm, fast-paced, funny fairy tale of a fearsome monster, thrilling adventure, and hope against all odds.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could imagine, and butchers, bakers and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them.

Everything was perfect – except for the misty Marshlands to the North which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth, to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Could a myth unseat a beloved king? Could a myth bring a once happy country to its knees? Could a myth thrust two brave children into an adventure they didn’t ask for and never expected?
