"After the publication of George Platt Lynes: Photographs from the Kinsey Institute (LJ 11/1/93) and a touring show of Lynes's photography in 1994, this once-forgotten American photographer seems to be regaining recognition. Particularly with this volume, the artist proves deserving of rediscovery. While Portraits does not carry the insightful essay or range of photographs included in the Kinsey collection's book, it does highlight the photgrapher's very best work, reproduced as lavish, full-page, sheet-fed gravures. With subjects including Paul Cadmus, Gertrude Stein, and Igor Stravinsky, the photos show the full range of Lynes's stylistic pallette, indicating the influence of surrealism, his fashion- and dance-photography innovations, and his experiments with the nude form. A worthy addition to larger photography collections."--Eric Bryant, Library Journal 02/01/1995 No library descriptions found. |
